Two things go wrong on moving day in New Jersey, and neither is the truck.
The first is where the truck can legally sit. The second is what you can leave at the curb once the truck has gone. Both are set by the municipality, not the state, and they are not close to consistent. In one town a moving truck is a commercial vehicle barred from a residential street after 9 PM. Fifteen minutes away, the constraint is that bulk trash only goes out on the first collection day of the week and you are limited to two items.
This covers eight towns. Every rule is quoted from the municipality's own page or code. If your town is not here, the pattern still holds: check the parking rule and the bulk rule separately, and check both before you book the date.
Once the two dates are fixed, they belong in your moving checklist. If your town is not one of the eight below, its page is in our New Jersey service areas directory.
| Town | The parking rule that can affect a truck | The disposal limit that catches people | Who to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jersey City | No truck or commercial vehicle on city streets 9 PM to 5 AM (§332-30). Any vehicle may park in any zone 2 hours, except Resident Only and Reserved Permit Areas. A resident permit does not reserve a space (§332-60). | Division of Parking Enforcement | |
| West Orange | No commercial vehicle on a residential street 9 PM to 7 AM. Where the exception applies at all, the vehicle must be single chassis, four wheels, under 20 feet, under 6,000 lb GVW. Separate township-wide ban 2 AM to 5 AM. | Traffic Bureau, 973-325-4044 | |
| Morristown | Residential permit lifts the 2-hour limit on one street only, maximum three per dwelling, expires 31 December, no out-of-state plates. The page does not mention moving trucks. | Town Clerk 973-292-6636 or Parking Authority 973-539-4810 | |
| Woodbridge | Neighborhood Residential Parking Permit covers named areas. One form per vehicle, NJ license, registration and insurance card required. | Sanitation schedules all curbside pickups by phone. | Police Permit Office, 1 Main Street |
| Clifton | Bulk waste first garbage day of the week only, out after 6 PM the night before, maximum 2 items. Not Thursday, Friday or Saturday. | 973-470-2239 | |
| Wayne | White goods and metal over 50 lb by appointment only, curb Tuesday night, collected Wed to Fri. Non-metal bulk goes on the second collection, no appointment. | Recycling and Solid Waste, 973-694-1800 x3315 | |
| Parsippany-Troy Hills | Township accepts a few extra bags on the second pickup. Large items need a private hauler. Sanitation “is not obligated to pick up the contents of a whole house,” and a summons follows if instructions are not followed. | 973-263-7273 | |
| Sayreville | Heavy and bulk trash April, July and October only. Limit two cubic yards, three by three by six feet. Out Monday to Wednesday night. Mattresses must be plastic-wrapped. | Public Works 732-390-7008 |
The blank cells are not omissions. They are towns whose published rules address one side and not the other, which is itself worth knowing before you plan around a rule that does not exist.
The overnight rule is the one to plan around. Section 332-30 of the city code, amended in 2016, says no person shall park any truck, omnibus, road tractor, semi-tractor, truck tractor or any commercial motor vehicle upon the streets of the city between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM, any day, except taxicabs and limousines licensed by the city. A move that runs late does not get to leave the truck loaded at the curb.
On daytime parking, the city's Permit Requirements and Restrictions sheet (marked Rev 12/16) says any vehicle may park in any zone for two hours, except in Resident Only Zones and Reserved Permit Areas. It lists Zone, Temporary, Itinerant, Daily Visitors and Monthly permits, and says commercial vehicles such as taxis, buses and livery vehicles are not eligible for zone permits.
Section 332-60 is blunt about what a permit is worth: a resident parking permit shall not guarantee or reserve an on-street space.
The sheet does not say which permit class covers a moving truck. Ask the Division of Parking Enforcement before the date rather than assuming a Temporary permit is the right instrument.
That 9 PM cutoff is why we load early for moves in Jersey City. The rest of the county sits on our Hudson County movers page.

The most specific commercial vehicle ordinance of the eight. Subsection 7-14.10 says no person shall park or store any commercial vehicle on any residential street, highway, right-of-way, public place or private road in the township between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM, every day, unless its conditions are met.
It defines a commercial vehicle as any motor vehicle, truck, pickup truck or van licensed or designated for the transportation of property. The conditions are narrow: only one such vehicle, single chassis body, not more than four wheels, not more than twenty feet long and seven feet high, not more than 6,000 pounds registered gross weight.
Two things soften it. The same subsection defines parking as standing or waiting by a vehicle not actually engaged in receiving or discharging passengers or merchandise. And it says nothing in it prohibits parking a commercial vehicle on a residential street while being used in the transaction of business with the owner or occupant of residential property in the area.
Neither clause names moving trucks. Separately, the township's FAQ says parking is prohibited 2 AM to 5 AM daily on all township streets except where posted, and a resident who needs to leave a car out should call the police desk at 973-325-4000. The Traffic Bureau lists Temporary Overnight Parking Permits and Dumpster Permits among its functions.
If a move runs across two days here, settle it with the Traffic Bureau in advance. A firm crew arrival time makes that call shorter, which is what our page for movers in West Orange is for, and the neighboring towns are on the Essex County movers hub.

Under Ordinance 7-17.5(d), a residential permit allows parking on the street for which the sticker was issued and does not guarantee parking. It lifts the two-hour restriction on that street and does not extend to any other road, where a ticket may follow.
A maximum of three permits is issued per dwelling unit. Permits expire 31 December and renewals open 1 December. Special conditions: no out-of-state plates, registration in the requestor's name, licence and registration matching a Morristown address.
The residential parking page does not mention moving trucks at all. Parking other than residential and hardship permits, including garage and metered parking, goes to the Morristown Parking Authority at 973-539-4810. The Town Clerk's Office is at 200 South Street, 1st Floor, 973-292-6636, and applications without special circumstances can be emailed to resparking@townofmorristown.org.
One street and three permits per dwelling is a tight frame to fit a truck into, so we walk through it when we quote a Morristown move. The wider county is on our Morris County movers page.

The Neighborhood Residential Parking Permit Application asks applicants to circle their area: E. Hill Road Iselin, Woodbridge (Proper) and Bunns Lane, Metro Park, Port Reading, Victory Acres, Avenel or Keasbey. It requires a valid New Jersey driver's licence, registration and liability insurance card, and a separate form for each vehicle. Completed forms go to the Woodbridge Police Permit Office, 1 Main Street, Ground Floor.
On disposal, the Division of Sanitation schedules all curbside collections except large tree wood, stone, brick, block, asphalt and concrete, which Roads handles. Three different extensions:
The township's Violations Schedule gives ordinance 7-11, a parking ticket, as an example carrying a $54 total cost.
Working out which extension to ring, and booking it, is part of what we take on for a Woodbridge move. The rest of the county has its own Middlesex County movers page.

The tightest bulk rule of the eight. Clifton's Rules for the Collection of Garbage define bulk waste as mattresses, furniture, wooden cabinets and doors, tables, lumber or rugs, cut to four-foot lengths and tied.
Bulk waste is collected on the first garbage day of the week, meaning a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday collection. It goes at the curb after 6 PM the night before, with a maximum of 2 items, first collection only. The rules say do not put bulk waste out on Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
The practical consequence: a Thursday, Friday or Saturday move means bulk items stay inside until the night before the first garbage day of the following week.
Electronics are excluded from garbage collection entirely. Computers, keyboards, monitors, printers, radios, stereos, telephone systems, televisions and VCRs can be donated or taken to the Recycling Center at City Hall Complex, 900 Clifton Avenue, or the Public Works Yard, 307 E. 7th Street. Those two sites take named categories, not general bulk.
Questions go to 973-470-2239. The rules say non-compliance could result in a summons.
Two items on one collection day is the number that catches people, so we set the discard plan against it when we quote movers in Clifton. Our other local pages here are listed on the Passaic County movers hub.
Wayne splits bulk collection into two tracks and people put both piles out on the same night.
White goods and large scrap metal over 50 pounds: by appointment only. White goods are full size stove or oven, dishwasher, microwave, washer, dryer, refrigerator or freezer (doors removed), dehumidifier or humidifier, air conditioner. Large scrap metal is anything predominantly metal: cast iron sink, exercise equipment, grill, fire pit, metal furniture, bed frames, lawn mower, snow blower (empty of fuel and oil), cabinet, tools, light fixtures, fencing, basketball hoop. Pick-ups are scheduled weekly, collected Wednesday to Friday, and items go to the curb Tuesday night. The 2026 Public Works Bulletin says get a date before putting anything out.
Non-metal bulk is different. Couches, wood furniture and other large non-metal items are collected on the second garbage collection of each week, and no appointment is needed.
Small metal under 50 pounds can be dropped at the recycling center, 201 Dey Road, along with electronics, which are not collected curbside.
Two official Wayne pages give different hours for that recycling center. Confirm with Recycling and Solid Waste at 973-694-1800 ext. 3315 before driving over.
The appointment is the long lead item here, so we ask which appliances are going before we price a move in Wayne.

Under the heading “Are You Planning to Move,” the township's Recycling and Sanitation page is direct about the limit. It will accept several extra bags of garbage at curbside on the second pickup, but residents must contact a private hauler to arrange a container for the removal of all large items. The Sanitation Department is not obligated to pick up the contents of a whole house at the curb, and residents are subject to a summons if the instructions are not followed.
The Recycling Center is open only to Parsippany residents and proof of residency is required. For materials brought in anything other than a car: the vehicle must be registered to you at your Parsippany address, vehicles over 1 ton are not permitted, no commercial vehicles, and no trailers or vehicles larger than a pickup on Saturdays. Rented vehicles are accepted Monday to Friday only, with prior approval and an appointment on 973-263-7273.
The Recycling and Sanitation page and the Recycling Center sheet publish different hours. Confirm before visiting.
Arranging the hauler for the large items is worth settling before the date, and it is one of the first questions we raise on a Parsippany move.

Heavy and bulk trash pickups happen in April, July and October 2026, schedules subject to change, and there are no special requests for additional bulk pickups. That makes the calendar the binding constraint rather than the volume.
Volume is capped anyway at two cubic yards, which the borough spells out as three feet by three feet by six feet. Bulk trash can go out from the Monday of the scheduled week, no later than Wednesday night.
Not collected curbside: TVs, printers, computers, fax machines, paint, hazardous waste, tires. Not collected as heavy or bulk: tree branches, cardboard boxes, appliances. Mattresses, box springs and futons must be wrapped in plastic. Wood must be tied and bundled, under four feet, free of nails.
One detail that runs straight into moving day: bulk items must be set out in the designated area and not behind vehicles. Items placed behind a vehicle are not picked up, and the borough will not return for missed collections. If the truck is at the curb that week, keep the pile clear of it.
Metal, light iron and appliance pickups are by appointment. Call Public Works on 732-390-7008 or 732-390-7043 the Monday or Tuesday before the scheduled day.
Three collection windows a year means the discard pile gets planned before the truck does, which is how we sequence a Sayreville move.
